If you are not aware of them, you shouldn't feel like you are out of the "loop", but you should feel a little twinge of "Dang, I wish I'da known this had been going on right under my nose".
Yes, Pardner has been a band for 15 - 19 years, (depending on whom you ask) playing a very strange, highly entertaining and accessible brand of Rock/Country/R&B filtered through a fine mesh of misfit, southern existential disbelief in the passage of time beyond 1981.

Pardner shows are sporadic, save for one constant: The Labor Day Show. The Saturday before labor day has long been a time for celebration in this crowd. For them, they're friends and family, this show seems to represent the end of both the Summer, and the Season of Good Times, marked by a much needed 4 day weekend to honor the workin' man.
"I say Labor, You say Day!"

Pardner, while masters of reviving the obscure Country classic, really seem to be hitting a late stride with their own original songs, which could now fill several albums, though they have strangely only recorded three songs in their entire history.
A large chunk of which chronicle the band's continuing fantasy construct of a communal 'lake house' in which a deep well of pard'lore' is constantly churning like a thick stew.

That said, in today's high-tech, electric world, I simply cannot believe that there are no pictures of them online, THERE ARE NO YOU-TUBE VIDEOS of Pardner. THERE'S NO SONGS ON MY ITUNES! How lazy are these guys?
Aren't all bands supposed to berate you with constant texts, emails, voicemails, myspace comments, facebook requests, and cold calls? Some bands go door to door, but Pardner; it's like they couldn't care less.
I don't get the joke. Where is your FACEBOOK FAN PAGE! It's like they don't want me to like them.
but I do, and so should you.

Come see Pardner with me on Saturday, Sept. 5th 2009 at the Star Bar in Atlanta, Little 5 Points and help me find out why they are so damn ambivalent about the future.
Show starts at 9:30

Objects Defying the Event Horizon of my Office

My little home office can be a bit of a 'black hole' of data. I'm a pretty disorganized person, and a pack rat to boot, so it's not uncommon for me to simply 'lose' things for long spans of time, only to rediscover them at a later date when their relevance is significantly less immediate. (Sadly, I also lose and accidentally destroy or fail to back up a lot of stuff too.)

I was recently rummaging through my office looking for my copy of "Shivering King and Others" by Dead Meadow. I had found a stack of naked discs and was rifling through them. Among them was a data dvd entitled "Strangers with Candy + MP3s" and it turned out to contain vhs quality rips of SWC a friend had given me, and about 12 folders of mp3s. Though none of them were DM, one of them was a folder of audio mixes from the "International Hits Winter Formal 2005" featuring a list of local atlanta luminaries and rapscallions alike performing certified Billboard hits from the 70's. Many of the performances were marred by alcohol, over-excitement, mustaches, and a serious case of the flu being passed around by the band. Otherwise, it was a memorably fun evening for all who participated. Great costumery and celebration ensued.

The show was closed by Lopez, probably the only sober person in the room - he took over and totally eased us all into oblivion with a really inspiring version of John Lennon's "Instant Karma", which I offer to you now as a gift.

Hooliganism Back In Fashion

Shane McGowan & The Pogues Play Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA
First Time here in 20 years.
They were fantastic. (from chunklet.com)

Chunklet.com is proud to announce the release of two herculean Harvey Milk albums on double vinyl.

First up is Harvey Milk's "My Love Is Higher Than Your Assessment of What My Love Could Be". Yes, this is the first time it has been issued on vinyl. Early purchases are rewarded with a special color that is available only for the first hours of its release.

This is ground zero for one of the nineties' last true cult bands; now legendary for churning ghostly wailings, unearthly bellows, and gentle whispers together into one soaring, crawling, ugly and beautiful blend of brilliance. My Love... is essential listening for all fans of hard and heavy post-rock, and stands as the official starting point for your Harvey Milk education.

And next up is Harvey Milk's "Courtesy & Good Will Toward Men".

Recut and remastered by Masterphonics. Repressed on two 180g dark grey 12" records. Exquisite jackets and insert letterpressed, die cut and embossed at Interrobang in Massachusetts. The epic "Courtesy & Goodwill" double album is being reissued in a third edition of 500. There's only about 300 available for sale.

"Brutally heavy, painfully slow, and heartbreakingly beautiful! Amazing double LP of slow motion dirge and obfuscated experiments in rhythmic tension swaddled in old school Melvins style pummel, interspersed with the occasional whisper of a song, delicate and lilting. Even at its intended speed, it almost sounds like you've accidentally set a 78 on the turntable and set the controls for 16rpm. Epic and absolutely essential." -- Aquarius Records

Get ready to have an awesome fall with these incredible albums in your collection.

Pardner and The Howlies celebrate a local Legend at 40

Friday Night, Oct. 10th at the EARL
Come out and help Pardner and The Howlies celebrate 40 years of a world where Curt Wells helps you out whenever he can.
This guy, if you don't know him, is the current sound engineer at the EARL. He's been the house Sound Guru at the Star Bar, and the touring sound guy for all kinds of bands including Man or Astro Man, Mooney Suzuki and tons of others. He rocked us all through the 90's with his gloriously under-achieving band "Grumpy", playing bass and cracking jokes without ever having a bad attitude.

He's fixed your/our amps, guitars, loaned you cables, jumped your car, bought you beer, run sound for your party, invented your bong, driven you home, made you lasagna, contributed to your magazine, compilation of bands, played your party, MC'd your event, recorded your demo and never once ignored your phone call.

Curt has basically lived the kind of life your parents always wanted for you. Curt is literally the walking, talking application of the golden rule.
So Friday night, we're gonna do unto him they way he does unto us.
You should be there. He'd be there for you.

We Truly Love You Curt!

First: Pardner
Then: The Howlies

Here's a track from Grumpy's out of print CD, 'The Surly Years' Check it out:
Enough!.mp3

Don't Miss Cordero at the EARL October 9th

Our good friends Cordero are playing a the earl next thursday night in east atlanta. Thanks...?

Creative Loafing published their yearly "best of" this week. Congrats to The Selmanaires for winning best local band as voted by the Creative Loafing readers. Noot d' Noot won the critics pick as best new band. And Anna Kramer and the Lost Cause won critics pick for best country band, I suspect the critic in question is Chad Radford, thanks man. Hey, maybe International Hits isn't so bad after all. I would really like to see Henry and his Chunklet army create a local best of. I have a feeling that would be worth the read.
If anybody is actually reading this I say "thanks". The Merrills were a meteoric post-punk band from Atlanta, GA and were active from 95-98. Members of this band were in, or went on to be in bands such as: The Plastic Plan, The Roy Owens Jr., The HOTS, Night of the Wolf (Chattanooga, TN), The Believers(FL) and Pardner. Recorded with Atlanta producer, Kevin Morrison (Holly Faith) in late '96 and released in early '97, The Merrills is a sonic crush of guitars and dramatic vocals, as was the style at the time. Do...check it out.

Sight For Sore Eyes: Another Good Cause.

A Sight For Sore Eyes: A Benefit for Krystal Woods
Saturday 2 August 2008
The Earl 9pm

Saturday August 2nd, 2008, Atlanta’s favorite musicians, performers, and businesses, are coming together at The Earl for A Sight For Sore Eyes: A Benefit for Krystal Woods. If you’ve ever met Krystal, you’ve never forgotten her. She’s worked in the neighborhood for years; you know you’ve seen her at Jake’s Ice Cream, The Flying Biscuit, Inman Perk, and currently Aurora Coffee.
You’re probably wondering why Krystal needs this benefit. Krystal has a degenerative eye condition known as karatoconus, which means her corneas are deteriorating to such an extreme that within the year she will be completely blind. The only way she can be helped is with complete cornea replacements ringing up at $10,000 per eye. Like many of us, Krystal doesn’t have health insurance so she applied for Medicaid, but was denied and told that basically she was not blind enough nor poor enough to qualify. This just isn’t true. Krystal needs our help.
Her friends The Selmanaires, The Preakness, DJ Dookie Platters, DJ Chris Devoe, burlesque star Vagina Jenkins, aerialist Leanna Repass, and Special Guests have come together to put on the best show of 2008, and wait there’s more! A badass raffle will take place with donations by all your favorite Atlanta spots such as Liberty Tattoo, Memorial Tattoo, Criminal Records, Ria’s Bluebird, Murphy’s restaurant, Taco Mac, Everybody’s Pizza, Figo Pasta, Righteous Room, Corner Tavern, American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, Cherry Bomb, Sweetgrass Spa, Key Lime Pie, Acapella Books, and so many more! You’ll have to see it to believe it! If you can’t make it to this fantastic experience, you can still help! Bond Community Credit Union located in the heart of Little Five Points has an account set up for Krystal, so take a few minutes to stop in, tell them you want to donate to A Sight For Sore Eyes or to Krystal Woods, and it’s that easy! You have helped a girl gain sight.
But if you still can’t do that, stop by Aurora Coffee, also in Little Five Points, between Criminal Records and Savage Pizza, and check out the art. From August 9th to August 31st Aurora is hosting a silent auction of your favorite local artists work with all proceeds going to Krystal Woods. AND if you’re an artist interested in donating a piece or two, contact us at <a href:"mailto:Sight4SoreEyes@gmail.com">Sight4SoreEyes@gmail.com

Stream Goofer Dust at the iHits blog!

Hey all, I just published a little flash player that will allow you to stream the entire Goofer Dust CD (with non vinyl track "Noot Indulgence"). Why? Because nobody remembers anything except that we played with Mudhoney in Seattle and they were fucking awesome. 20 years on as a band, Superfuzz Bigmuff being reissued, mostly the original lineup and nice guys to boot, Mudhoney are everything a rock band should. They are the antidote to all modern "indie rock" blandness. Thank God they exist. So it's a special treat to be able to play with them again here in the ATL on June 11th at The Earl. If you too are as bored with rock that seems to serve no other purpose than background ambiance at a honky white wine spritzer dinner party come see Anna Kramer and the Lost Cause open for Mudhoney and renew your faith in Rock.

More Anna dates this summer
tonight, may 24th at The Star Bar for Bubbapalooza 9pm
The Mighty Corndog a Rama at Lenny's June 26th
July 4th back at The Star Bar for some All American fun

Noot d Noot "Goofer Dust" release date set

International Hit's Afrobeatpsychedelicelectrofunk superheroes Noot d' Noot release their long awaited Goofer Dust lp/cd on July 8th! It's definitely been a busy time in all areas of my life, at once. Last night I was blessed to have the See-Thru Souljah come over to HQ and spend a few moments distracting me from the virtual "quilt-of-commitment-and-responsibility" that is covering my fat ass right now. We fogged the room with bug spray and put the brand new Noot D'Noot :: Goofer Dust remaster on the stereo.
Folks, that record is made for High Times. Every single moment of it's 45min is a joy, a journey, a setting. Running the spectrum from psychedelic heavy seventies rock (without the bloated vocal ego that killed it then) to soaring and sweeping ambient textures; From pFunk inspired party-jams to straight up hard afro Jazz ala Fela Kuti, this record is nearly flawless in it's ability to pull me in and keep me there.
I was sad when it was over.
I know this isn't big label news...but it's gonna be.

Check out early mixes of "Neighborhood Clucker" on the flash player here or download "Fire King" from our site
for a taste of what's to come this spring/summer 2008

hoping you are well and happy.
tro

Spreading Our Love for Anna Kramer & The Lost Cause

Are Y'all Ready for Jiggle City?

The Selmanaires on GameTap TV

OK. the navigation on their site is weird, locks up, and you have to watch ads, BUT Turner is doing cool music stuff now.
